What are dental veneers?

If you’re undergoing a treatment such as veneers, we’ll ensure you understand exactly what it involves before we get started. As mentioned above, dental veneers are wafer-thin porcelain shells that are applied to cover the front of your teeth. They can be customised to your mouth so that they look natural; we’re able to bond the material to your teeth and adjust their colour, size and shape to best suit you. Many people in Melbourne still believe getting veneers means teeth that look overly white, big and unsuited to your mouth! That’s not the case anymore and treatments have progressed significantly to achieve a subtle, beautiful look.

What you can expect when you get veneers fitted at our Melbourne clinic:

  1. You will visit us for an initial consultation where we’ll find out what you want to achieve and plan your procedure. This may include an X-ray and some impressions of your mouth.
  2. The impressions allow us to create a mockup of the final result so that we can give you a trial smile to show you how the veneers would look on you before you even start.
  3. Before the veneers can be fitted, your dentist will prepare your teeth by reshaping the surface to get the thickness just right. This process involves trimming the enamel and you may receive local anaesthetic to numb the area.
  4. Your dentist will take a model of your teeth and your veneers will be prepared. This may take 2-4 weeks so we can fit temporary veneers in the meantime.
  5. You’ll visit us again for the final bonding process! Veneers will be permanently bonded to your teeth and you’ll leave us with a brand-new smile you’re going to love!

No. Like any cosmetic treatment, they don’t last forever; veneers will eventually require repair, maintenance or replacement. The question is: how long will they last?

There are 2 types of veneers:

Composite veneers/bondings and porcelain veneers. Composite veneers are made from plastic based materials that are applied directly to the teeth in a single visit, whereas porcelain veneers are performed over 2 visits indirectly (they are made off site and then glued on to the teeth).

Composite veneers are additive, which means that the teeth are not reduced in order to have them attached.

  • They can last between 5-8 years but will require regular maintenance as the plastic composite material deteriorates and needs to be polished or repaired.
  • If a composite veneer chips, this can be easily repaired. If a porcelain veneer chips, it has to be replaced entirely.

Porcelain veneers involve some reduction of the tooth and so are irreversible. The upside is that they are much stronger, shinier and more durable. They require no maintenance apart from regular home care, as well as checkups and cleans with your dentist.

  • Porcelain veneers last an average of 10-15 years – the better you look after your teeth (including cleaning well and not grinding at night) the longer they will last.
  • Porcelain veneers last much longer if there is plenty of enamel left behind after the teeth have been reduced.

Yes.

  • Composite veneers can be easily upgraded into porcelain veneers.
  • Porcelain veneers can be replaced with new porcelain veneers if there is plenty of enamel left underneath. Otherwise, they have to be upgraded into crowns. The more times porcelain veneers are redone, the less enamel will remain and the higher the likelihood of having to upgrade to crowns – which is why we recommend composite veneers for patients.

Veneers are primarily a cosmetic treatment performed to enhance the shape, colour or size of teeth.

  • The process involves placing a layer of composite or porcelain onto the front surface of the teeth to enhance the way they look.
  • Your smile is one of the most important features that people look at when they see your face – our smile is what we use to communicate emotions and warmth.
  • Most people that get veneers generally feel self-conscious about the way their teeth look which can affect their self-esteem.
  • Having veneers helps patients to feel more confident about themselves and their smile.
  • We tend to find that after getting veneers, our patients tell us they feel much better about themselves and don’t have to hide their smile in photos or social settings.

Are they expensive? Well, that depends on how important your smile is to you! We have payment plans available so you can achieve the smile of your dreams within your budget.

Composite veneers are made from plastic based materials that are applied directly to the teeth in a single visit, whereas porcelain veneers are performed over 2 visits indirectly (they are made off site and then glued on to the teeth).

  • Composite veneers are additive, which means that the teeth are not reduced. They are reversible and can potentially be completely removed to bring your teeth back to their original shape if desired.
  • Porcelain veneers involve some reduction of the teeth and are irreversible. The upside is that they are much stronger, shinier and more durable than composite. Porcelain veneers rely on a strong bond between the porcelain and the underlying enamel. Therefore, the less tooth structure that is removed, the more securely they stick.

Veneers only ruin your teeth if the teeth need to be prepared aggressively to achieve the desired result, which exposes the underlying dentine. In these situations, the dentist will generally recommend orthodontics first so that they don’t need to remove as much tooth structure.

Porcelain veneers involve some reduction of the tooth and are irreversible. The upside is that they are much stronger, shinier and more durable than composite.

  • Usually, a local anaesthetic is required before the teeth are prepared for porcelain veneers. This is slightly uncomfortable, but once the numbness kicks in, patients should feel no pain whatsoever.
  • After the teeth are prepared for porcelain veneers, usually the dentist will place a set of temporary veneers for patients to wear while the porcelain veneers are being made at the lab. During this time the gums may feel a bit tender and the teeth slightly sensitive. This is only temporary and once the porcelain veneers are bonded there is no more pain or sensitivity.

Veneers involve the placement of a restorative material – either composite or porcelain on the outer surface of the front teeth to enhance the shape, colour or size of the teeth.

  1. At your first appointment, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth. A dental laboratory will then use this to create a model of your mouth called a wax-up, which will be used to create your temporary and final veneers.
  2. During your next visit, your teeth are prepared for the veneers.
  3. A second impression is taken, and temporary veneers are placed over your teeth until the final ones are ready.
  4. At your following appointment, your dentist will remove the temporary veneers, and bond the final veneers into place.
  5. Your teeth are restored to optimal shape and function, and your smile will be greatly improved.

Our veneers are more than just cosmetic

While veneers are popular throughout Melbourne for their cosmetic benefits, they are also used to improve the strength and resilience of the tooth moving forward. This is a particularly common solution for cracked or chipped teeth where the veneer is not just a welcome aesthetic improvement but also a significant boost to the strength of the tooth. It can also help protect the tooth from further issues.

The dental practitioners at Brunswick East Dental Studio are passionate about not only the aesthetics but the health of your mouth. That’s why we also offer general dentist services for Coburg, Carlton, Fitzroy North, Northcote and Clifton Hill.

Quality porcelain veneers for long-lasting protection

Porcelain veneers are a stronger, more durable alternative to their composite cousins, and can remain on the tooth for many years if properly cared for. They are bonded to your tooth using a special dental cement that gives the veneer a strong, long-lasting hold.

Another advantage of porcelain veneers is that they are low maintenance and relatively easy for a dentist to apply. As long as you maintain good oral hygiene, the veneer will stay strong and bright just like a normal tooth.

Quality composite veneers to reduce tooth structure loss

Composite veneers are usually bonded directly to the tooth surface using a resin-based filling material. The advantage of composite bonding is that they do not require any removal of tooth structure and are also cheaper than porcelain veneers. They do require more maintenance over time, however, they can be easily repaired and/or replaced when they gradually deteriorate.
